About Us

The Department of Roads (DoR) started functioning from 3rd week of December 1959 as Bhutan Roads Project. It used to take care of all the development and construction works like residential buildings, non-residential building like schools, hospitals, offices, store-godown, road constructions etc. It was renamed to Bhutan Engineering Services from 1/10/1961. The first Highway "Phuntsholing - Thimphu" was constructed in a record time of 14 months only by the then Bhutan Engineering Services. From then the Department has various names (to name some): Public Works Department, Department of Roads, Public Works Division, Division of Roads and now the Department of Roads.

The Department of Roads is now headed by the Director General

The Department is divided into mainly five division.
1. Investigation & Development Division
2. Survey & Design Division
3. Bridge Division
4. Roads Division, which is further divided into eight field section.
